5 Tips for Computer and Systems Engineering Students

There are many myths around this profession, which are necessary to clarify them to have a realistic vision considering the positive and negative things.
Today many students see their future uncertain and gray when they leave with the title under their arm. It's normal and it happens in every race. They hear a lot of information and don't quite know what is true and what is pure fantasy.

Here we start with these "realities":
1. You'll be guaranteed a job
  • If you live in Latin America and you have decided to study systems or a career related to computer science, I have good news and bad news for you: The good news: If you are not terribly "bad" you will find a job. The labor market in LATAM has grown in the last 4 years, today many companies work remotely and thus opens the doors to be able to work from anywhere you are
          2. It can be a very absorbing job
  • The bad: You're going to do more hours than a clock. You could say it another way, but I already commented that it was bad news. In computer science there are no schedules. They send the clients and send the incidents that are usually many, so keep that in mind because this can affect your social life and your family life.
3. Study computer science only  if it's your passion
  • In my opinion, working in the ICT sector is a vocational issue. If you do not like computer systems it is better that you change studies quickly or that you dedicate yourself to something else, because I guarantee that you will be bitter and you will sour everyone around you.

As a very absorbing profession you should be passionate about it. If so, if you have a great time in front of a computer, you will enjoy like a child in a ball pool.

4. Get used to adaptation, don't get left  behind
  • Computing is very variable and what today is a paradigm (example: physical servers) tomorrow is something old (virtual servers have come out) and the day after tomorrow we talk about the Software-Defined Datacenter (SDDC) or Cloud Computing, another twist.

5. Continuous training is essential     in your profession

  • This world is terribly changing, and information technologies are clearly no strangers. Most likely, when you start studying, the technology that you will find in a few years, when you finish your studies, has not yet come out.
